Gear

These are the items that I ultimately ended up with when I came home. Folks can use this to plan a short or a long hiking trip. Needless to say, gear is one thing you go over and talk about continuously on the trail. I have many thoughts and will post them soon… I just wanted to lock down what i remembered as i unpacked

Main Pack
• Tent - I carried an REI quarterdome 2 person - 3.5 lbs
• Pack - Gregory Whitney 95 Small - 6.2 lbs - 87 liter
• Jet boil system
• Large propane canister (eliminates need to carry jetboils "legs")
• Tarp - I used the insulation material that goes under siding, I believe plyvex?
• Tooth brush - sawed in half for weight reasons
• Toothpaste
• Rope - nylon rope, 30-40 feet
• 2 light weight compression sacks - Med and Sm - Sea to Summit brand, I used one for clothes and one for my sleeping bag, made a huge difference
• Sleeping bag - I used a 20 degree bag - 3.25 lbs - but that is overkill, you can get away with a 35 degree and a liner (which can be sent home)
• Platypus
• Pack cover - Sea to Summit
• Toilet paper - bring an entire roll - but take the cardboard holder in the middle out (weight)
• Plastic bag for phone, phone and a Mophie juice pack for the iphone (a device that carries an extra charge for the phone)
• Thru hikers Companion - can be found for free at http://www.aldha.org/comp_pdf.htm, if you are doing a section hike, just print the pages you need out, for the whole trip, I would suggest one of the other books as they also have an elevation profile
• Radio - http://www.kaitousa.com/KA001.htm what I had, weather radio is a nice thing on the trail
• Lighter
• Fire Starter - this should be left out for long trips
• Filter - MSR ceramic filter
• Headlamp
• 1 Liter Nalgene
• Emergency blanket - doubles as a mechanism to make your sleeping bag warmer
• 1st aid kit , Couple of towelettes, Ibuprofen, plan for 4 a day in case of pain (make sure to put into small plastic bag, not in heavy plastic bottle they come with), bandages, sharp object, mole skin
• Heavy duty Tape - I put it around my hiking poles - weight
• Dr bonners soap
• Liner trash bag - in heavy rains, the pack and pack cover just don’t do the trick, I added a trash bag liner to the inside of my pack and have never had moist stuff since (and I got hit with some rain too)
• Sleeping Pad - I liked my thermarest Z http://www.amazon.com/Therm-Rest-Mattress-Limon-Regular/dp/B001QWGSU2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1277689572&sr=1-2
• Head phones for iphone, music, radio, etc
• Spoon / fork
• Knife

Food
• Clif bars - quick breakfast and snacks (I can no longer do jerky)
• Oatmeal repackaged into a single plastic bag
• Crystal light / gatorade (gatorade is heavier, but worth the weight)
• Summer sausage to add to dinners
• Sharp cheddar cheese
• For shorter trips, lunch Salami / tortilla
• Noodles /pasta sides

Trekking poles (loved those!)

Clothes
Note: this includes what I was wearing, which was one T shirt and long pants most of the time. I have really fallen in love with the Under Armour stuff for shirts and underwear

• Rain jacket
• 2 pair of tshirts (polyester, NOT cotton)
• 1 long sleeve shirt (UA)
• Sweater - doubles as a pillow
• 2 pair of pants - REI, quick drying, no rain pants, waste of time
• Silk liner for top of body, adds 10 degrees to your bag
• Long johns for bottom
• 3 * Sock liners
• 3* Socks
• Buff for head
• 3 * Underwear - needless to say, compression underwear
• Bug net for head - worth the few ounces
• Woven hat - for the cooler nights
