Monday 5-24

Uncle johnys didnt have my size superfeet, they were sold out. I went to johnson city w Connecticut to the large outfitter, looking for superfeet. Ofcourse they didn't have my size either, they are very popular and sold out. I cannot understand the logic, if it's popular, then why are you out?everything seems backwards here. I did buy compression sacks, I can tell these are game changers. My clothes and sleeping bag were reduced in size three or four times, all the stuff now fits really snug into my pack and with the packs compression straps feels really good on my back.

Uncle johnnys
Uncle Johnnys hostel is a historic staple on the AT, he started a thru hike 15-20 years ago and when he got to Erwin he said " I found my home", went back to Alabama sold all his stuff and returned to Erwin to start a hostel. He does have a kick ass location, right on the AT and the river and has a mystical vibe about the place. He could do a way better job of running the place, but instead sits around and drinks all day. I do admit that I obsessively have analyzed every aspect of his business and what I would do to improve every aspect of his operation.

Either way, we had a really fun night sitting on the deck drinking beer and analyzing all of my gear item by item. I shed 5-6 lbs of weight, more useless shit going home, compass / thermometer combo, extra nalgene bottle, bunch of 1st aid items, a piece of my pack, etc. With stuff gone and substituted My base weight is now 28 lbs. Carrying less water and food should keep me around 38 lbs. I would suggest anyone attempting a thru hike be under 25-30 lbs w food and water. Key is to start With light base items; tent, pack and sleeping bag. You are either comfortable walking or in camp.
