Santa Elena Cloud Forest

By now, the trip is really kicking in, the hostel we are staying in, has a kitchen and we are going grocery shopping for breakfast, dinner, etc. Things are starting to feel like home. By now in the trip, I am kicking myself that I didnt start learning Spanish prior to the trip and I am obsessively listening to the Spanish app I downloaded (duo lingo). Taking the time to say Hola, come esta, etc is really paying dividends and makes me feel more and more connected to Costa Rica.

Santa Elena (like most towns we've been to) is a run down village / town. This area (the monteverde and Santa elena) are known for their nature preserves, which is basically a section of rain forests that have been protected. Interestingly, Quakers from Alabama moved their families here in the 1800's in protest of the Civil War and bought up a ton of land. When the Volcano erupted, it killed most of them off. Oh, the irony, you escape war to move under a volcano to get killed. These rainforests get visited quite a bit and the Monteverde is the bigger of the two destinations. We chose the "path less traveled" and went to Santa Elena.

The cloud forest itself was 20 min outside town, we had about 4-5 hours to walk the park. It rained all day (as it seems to mostly do in these things), so, it was similar to our experience at Arenal (except better trails).

I have never seen Monteverde, but I would suggest going there. Or maybe skip cloud forests altogether, although the lush green forests are majestic.

We got home and started prepping for Zip lining, my dad is already complaining about it, so guessing he will fall out....
