The biggest reason people visit Damascus is the creeper trail. People from all over the world come to visit and ride the creeper trail. The creeper trail is an old railroad that has been paved over, it is a 34 mile trail going from whitetop station to abbington va, with Damascus being a half way point. You can rent a mountain bike and they will shuttle you to the top of white top station and you ride the 17 miles down to damascus.
On Wednesday I took the 3-4 hour bike ride down the creeper trail. It has a restaurant half way (Taylors valley). The trail runs along side a river and the AT, I took my time riding the trail, stopping at a lot of scenic places along the way. It was a good break from hiking and my first time riding a mountain bike through the woods. I also scouted for a good / secluded camping spot that I could snag coming out of Damascus.
Green Cove was the General Store / Train stop (you can see the before and after)
